Serendipity

/// Something I spoke about during biz comm ... 2 min elevator pitch kinds 2011///

It has been voted as one of the ten English words that are hardest to translate; but in simplest of words it means “a happy accident”. Serendipity is when one finds something that one was not expecting to find.
However my science teacher always used to refer to it as discovering something by making mistakes.  For example: Alexander Fleming, in his great hurry to go for a vacation forgot to clean bacterial dishes. So when he came back from his vacation he saw a green mold developing, which had killed the bacteria. That green mold turned out to be Penicillin which we all now know is the ground-breaking anti-biotic.
So from the beginning that has what it meant for me: something good resulting out of your mistakes.  Like for example: Did you know that Saccharin, the artificial sweetener, was discovered because a chemist didn't wash his hands after a day at the office? Yes, Constantin Fahlberg was trying to come up with new and interesting use for coal tar. After coming back from office, he went home and something strange happened.
He noticed the rolls he was eating tasted particularly sweet. He asked his wife if she had done anything interesting to the rolls, but she hadn't. They tasted normal to her. Fahlberg realized the taste must have been coming from his hands -- which he hadn't washed. The next day he went back to the lab and started tasting his work until he found the sweet spot.

There are many stories of accidentally invented food: the potato chip was born when cook George Crum tried to silence a fussy customer who kept sending french fries back to the kitchen for being soggy; But no food-invention has had as much success as Coke. Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton was trying to make a cure for headaches. He mixed together a bunch of ingredients. It only took eight years of being sold in a drug store before the drink was popular enough to be sold in bottles.
But is it all luck-by chance? Discovery by mistake? Love by chance happening?
Louis Pasteur once said, "chance favors the prepared mind." That's the genius behind all these accidental inventions - the scientists were prepared. They did their science on the brink and were able to see the magic in a mistake, set-back, or coincidence.
After finding out this list, I was just wondering: what discoveries have been lost due to small chance? How many discoveries have been made, but never told about? What applications of discoveries have we missed? Which mistake have we made that could have made us famous?

Dyna Tai: Super Womanà

SuperHero name: Dyna Tai
Real Name: Lata Katmarkar
Name of Detergent: DynaMagic

Background story

Not too long ago, Lata Katmarkar was a simple Marathi maid in the mid 30s, residing near the slums of Mumbai.
Like countless others she was also suffering from domestic abuse and violence.
One day in a drunken state her husband beat her black and blue and dumped her body in a nearby detergent/chemical factory inside a bunker full of dark liquid that he mistakes for water. The bunker actually turned out to be a chemical fission reactor that was used to separate solid compounds for making detergents. Next morning Lata woke up with the special powers of the detergent and thus Dyna Tai was born.

Cut to present times, she is a full time saviour. Lata Katmarkar spends her day rescuing working wives from daily chores by working as their maid and in the night as Dyna Tai she protects the unarmed, vulnerable women from the roadside hooligans, drunken husbands and abusive in-laws.

Over the years the stories of her bravery and vigilante justice grew and so did her popularity with the common public. As she gained celebrity status in the country, many brands tried to associate themselves with her to gain advantage of leveraging her super powers with their brand’s power. But Dyna Tai never endorsed anyone or any product with the exception of course, the one brand of detergent that was her namesake and creator: DynaMagic.

The market share of DynaMagic grew by double ever since she became the face of the brand which was phenomenal considering the slow growth and saturation of FMCG sector market.

Key characteristics

Dyna Tai, even before she became the unintended social protagonist, had a tendency to keep everything spick and span. She takes pride in her work and thinks of herself as an ultimate cleanser that cleans the society as well as clothes.

She has a soft corner for house wives, because of her own past and is a firm believer in women empowerment. This is why she advocates the use of DynaMagic detergent as it gives freedom to the housewives by ensuring a quick, clean wash saving their time and effort.

Despite the personal hell that she has gone through or maybe because of it, Dyna Tai is an empathetic and gullible person.

Super powers

Dyna Tai a name resembling someone dynamic and “Tai” meaning an elder sister in the local language of Mumbai, has the super human qualities of being able to tackle any forces that are against her or against being human.
During the day, when she is just another maid, she goes house to house to do her regular work and observes any instance of robbery, eve-teasing, injustice or violence against women, children, and men and tries to clean up the mess by changing into Dyna Tai- her night time avatar. Dyna Tai has the super powers of being an angel and messiah to the sufferers of evil by using her special powers like-

·         Quick healing
·         lightning speed
·         photographic memory
·         strong intuition based senses for detecting dangerous and hostile situations
·         generating air and water cyclones anywhere
·         Can dissolve in water and travel to other places
·         She has traces of Alum in her and therefore has powers that can be traced to its unique properties such as:
o   being flame retardant,
o   a chemical flocculant ,
o   Cosmetic (nice smelling) powers.

Her special move to counter extreme situations has got to do with creating a cyclone that can swipe and challenge close to hundred people at a time. She creates this cyclone on her own with a combination of wind, water and DynaMagic detergent particles that have become a part of her DNA. This can travel at heavy speeds and carry whatever comes on its way.

Costume

She is a traditional Indian woman who wears the Sari but with a twist. Her special Marathi Sari worn in a divided manner gives her the flexibility to move around quickly and without any concern. Her sari is tightly wrapped and made from a mix of spandex and poly-lycra that ensures that she can get out of tightest of situation. Also, because of the DynaMagic particles the sari is dirt repellent.

It is extremely popular amongst the people as a symbol of Dyna tai. Also the costume has many variants that have now started to sell as fashionable dresses.

Social and Personal Issues that Dyna Tai Handles with her super powers:

Since Dyna Tai was herself a part of an abusive relationship, she knows only too well what other women in similar condition go through. Therefore whenever she sees a woman in trouble she uses her cyclonic powers and creates an instant cyclone and engulfs the person who is committing an evil act. The person is suffocated due to lack of oxygen inside the cyclone and faints. This is when she leaves the person in front of a police station and disappears before the paparazzi come.

As mentioned before she has some properties of Alum in her, one of them being a chemical flocculant. She has the ability to clarify waste water by allowing dirt particles to stick together which she then removes by generating her trademark cyclone.

The Ordinary Life

"Time stands still best in moments that look suspiciously like ordinary life."- Brian Andreas

The one story of Lord Krishna that has endured the test of time & my forgetfulness is when Draupadi was being humiliated in court and he appeared (in a hologram) just moments before she and everyone else lost hope. Even though I am not religious or ritualistic or sometimes even a believer, this image provided by B R Chopra has remained with me always. But of course I never expected anything of this sort to happen in real life, I mean …lives are so ordinary and boring, there is no place for magic in it? Is there? But then I remember a hot and humid school day in Delhi, very long time ago… it feels like it happened just yesterday……
I paused for a while to catch my breath. With the building of new business school, our secondary school campus was becoming a large and complex maze structure with constructions & out-of-bounds signs cropping up here and there. I had just gone to the Primary Building to submit my school fee and was returning just before the start of the last lecture of the day.

It was a particularly lazy school day; nothing much was left in the syllabus to cover and the teachers would generally just declare “self-study” as the teaching plan and all of us would either play “FLAMES” or Book cricket. I climbed up to the top floor and stopped when I saw my classmates carrying their bags and walking in a straight file. Someone told me all the corner classrooms in B block building were being shifted for the new construction beginning next week. The teacher told me the new location of the classroom and walked away with the rest of the class. I sighed and began packing my things. I really did love my seat, it was perfect position to be in. It was just back enough that I could eat during classes and the teacher wouldn’t notice but wasn’t so far back that she would pick on us. I was sitting next to a quiet girl and my best friend sat in the next row so it was easy to exchange meaningful looks, again without catching the teacher’s eye. Damn this construction! By the time I was done the class room was empty and silent and I felt a sudden strong feeling of loneliness. The irrational thought came up like sudden vomit: My friend should have waited for me, hell! She should have gone with me to the finance department so that I would not be the last & lonely one left. I felt my eyes welling up …why was I being so stupid? With great effort I put the thought & the urge to cry aside, and started walking towards the new wing thinking about new sitting arrangements. Classroom arrangements were tricky, the teacher would try her best to separate good friends, make back-benchers first-benchers, make sure introverts sat with extroverts, make sure people who didn’t get along didn’t sit together and most importantly people who got along too well didn’t sit together either. She did all this to maximize an uneasy peace in the classroom. What a waste of talent I thought; She should have gone to solve the Kashmir problem. After taking a few wrong-turns I finally saw my “friends” through a classroom window and turned to enter the correct room. My friends were all sitting together and there was no seat left for me, I noticed this very stoically; but maybe my face betrayed some emotion before I even registered it in my brain and all the girls started giggling looking at me. I was upset at them and embarrassed, there is something truly irritating about group of girls giggling in high voices that I noticed when I was at the receiving end of it. I looked at the teacher and she just stood there wondering how she could have forgotten about me. That’s exactly what happened isn’t it? I thought to myself. They had all forgotten about me. It was then I felt my eyes water again- stupid girls… I couldn’t cry. It was just a silly thing…they are silly…don’t cry..don’t cry... Suddenly a voice broke out from across the other corner of classroom “over here!” I knew who it was; I looked at the boy’s section and there he was, sitting next to a vacant seat. The prefect who would clear IIT JEE exams and win the house cup as well. I saw the unexpected jealousy on my friends’ faces, a surprise on all the guy’s faces and plain incomprehensible shock on my teacher’s face. I think now that I felt more than saw that. Specially when I walked past my teacher, I could feel her face muscles moving, trying to figure out a way to stop this from happening (a girl and a boy sitting together- A cardinal sin!) but I walked on and sat down next to him without letting any feeling of happiness escape, the tears subsided the hotness left my face and I felt the cool breeze on my face. I don’t remember if I spoke to him or even looked at him or spoke about this incident to anyone afterwards- till now. Of course I was just trying to downplay this Knight-in-Shining-armor moment, but truly… for the 16-year-old-silly-ordinary-me, it was time which stood still and a prayer that was answered just moments before I was losing hope.
