Have been feeling so overworked recently ..weekday stress, working weekends, break-less ...jaded...and then i decided not to work on independence day. A kind of rebellion against the tyranny of cheapskate IT companies that suck the blood and relief out of employees.

And so on the night of 14th August i was watching mindless TV, mindlessly, when the song "O WOmaniya" came into my head. A unique song from an especially unique film, I was trying to remember the mischievous lyrics... something about how to handle a tharki/turned on man and his hormones and that voice...the deep-raspy voice that i love-love. A smile came to my face when i remembered the lyrics ... "badle rupaiya ke dena chawaniya " so true! never be the one who loves more...I had that craving that i have for food, only this time I just had to listen to that earthy song that reminds me of lust marriage and strangely love for my country.
I opened YouTube( my best friend) and played the song and before i knew it was trapped playing the excellent song suggestions that came next (my best friend does know me better than anyone alive). One after the other the 80/90s songs that i grew up with. How each of them had a story, and i remembered things which i didn't know were possible that i remembered.
Before I knew it, till and beyond the stroke of midnight of 14th August, when the world was asleep and India awakened I danced and danced my way back into my License-Raj- upbringing

"O piya, o PIya....leke doli aa" ( Falguni pathak looks so manly but then her woman-self comes out when she starts to sing in that sweet voice...and this video... its inspired totally...love the expression of the girl in the video... she is proud and detached and crazy at same time! She totally owns the feeling that she loves this guy and is doing this over the top gesture <3 )
"Roop tera mastana.." (the remix..not the original song....i hate it when it happens to original songs that i love but the romantic lyrics turn playful because of the choreography...the guy singing in shower and obsessing about his looks, the maid and the adolescent boy dancing, the working man and working woman singing the song oblivious to surroundings, the chokras eve teasinga nd getting caught:D .. OK..this isnt the embarrassing part...the part is that I actually remember the rap word-by-word... <Indian girl the most beautiful girl in the world...watch this! :D> cue saxaphone)
"Yaar bina chain kahan ree....." (i remember how payal and shweta thought that I liked this song as i was the only one without a boyfriend in class 9... maybe it was true... who knows... like i said before songs reach out to feelings deep and unknown even to self...only youtube knows :) )
"Mehbooba oh mehbooba..." and now in my old age i finally appreciate the belly movements of mademoiselle Helen....am not even able to copy her coz of my damn-pseudo-beer-belly...aaargh! Anyhow ...the song..is a solid gold classic... anytime...and every time and all the time!
"Sun sahiba Sun">> Strangely... why oh god why? the lyrics... the line that got stuck in my head was..."koi haseena kadam...aise uthati nahi...".. I dont know... maybe again the girl is owning up to her feelings... that calls to me again?
"Aake bhar lo bajuon mein...tumko hai kasam jaan meri jaa rahi sanam" The russian ties remind me of my dad's trip and how my dream was USSR never USA ...shayad yehi to pyaar hai...

"Pardesia ye sach hai piya sab kehte maine ...tujhko dil de diya!!" ( Again the remix and not the original..I love Rekha but no one could have rocked the step as well as Rakhi Sawant and in the end the way the guy comes and dances...its too cute and... yeah well..)
"tere bina jiya jaaye na...": Took a break from dance to listen to this one... the best part of this song however is the end in which the male voice takes over and sort of changes the tune of the same lyrics a bit. Yea am a sucker for romance...
"kaali teri choti hai paranda tere laal ni" Roopali ganguli and Sudha chandran were my earliest idea of what beuty is. In this song in her pink glitter dress and the red paranda Rupali Ganguly was my eternal crush. I frequently imagine myself in her place. Yes i Do. Am that person.
"Der na ho jaaye kahin der na ho jaaye">> Kab aaoge...jism se jaan judaa hogi kya tab aoge...yep that reminds me of my mom calling me when ever i was late from any school party (which i had many)...but apart form that what i love is when ashwini bhave shakes her booty while being extremely sad towards the end of the song to fast beat aaja ve maahi tera rasta udek diya...For sure some could argue that the original is way more haunting what with Nusrat Fateh Ali KHan's spectalularly unique voice and the drama of a qawaali... but am sure by now you must know am not a purist :/
"kaise bholegi mera naam">> So it's true you see the person you love everywhere... but here the energy that this guy Palash sen translates is...infectious and obsessive....hmmm..... I do love songs in which one or the other is obsessive. Speaks volumes :|! "Jeeti tu haare hain hum... "
"janam samjha karo" Must be milind soman and his impossibly good looks? But again this song and the videos of songs were so...IN...when i was young...and how Helen Brodie looked like a million bucks as the simple/sweet/innocent girl... But there is a section of the song that i repeat and repeat and repeat ....Any guesses? the flute instrumental music! It's played somewhere in the middle of the song and Leslie Lewis is a bloody genius is what it is.
"Manzil dekhi dil bhi bhoola...milke .aapseee" Dimple and Sunny...I don't particularly like either of them, they havent danced well or looked well, i dont know which movie. The fact that this song is featured in the list is because of this obscure channel called El TV that played equally obscure music continuously. Am a victim of marketing.
